Incoming House Officers
This page is for new House Staff or Fellows beginning work in 2019
All incoming residents and fellows must obtain a current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS card. Current cards for one or more of the advanced AHA courses (ACLS, PALS, or NRP) may also be required, depending upon your specialty.
These requirements must be completed PRIOR to your orientation and must be current through at least July 2019 or you will NOT be granted clinical privileges.
PLEASE NOTE: Current and Active American Heart Association BLS is required for all house staff (even if you already hold a current ACLS, PALS, or NRP card).

Options for completing these courses:
You are strongly encouraged to complete these courses prior to your arrival at the Medical Center. You must still complete the registration form above even if you do not plan on attending our courses.
While completing these requirements be very cautious of online courses. There are several courses on the web that are not valid. Only courses purchased directly from the American Heart Association are accepted. Call Kathy Nelson (336-716-3434) with HeartCode course questions.
If you are unable to complete your required courses before arrival, Life Support Education will provide opportunities for completing courses at your expense. Options include:
1. HeartCode Online Learning: Life
Support Education will offer American Heart Association (AHA) blended learning options for BLS, ACLS, and PALS. You
will complete the online learning portion at your convenience during the 60 days
prior to orientation. You will schedule yourself to complete the skills evaluation
just prior to orientation and you can even complete the skills for all three of
these courses on the same day!
2. NRP: Participants must complete the NRP exam online prior to coming to class. Upon registration for the course, participants will be directed to the American Academy of Pediatrics website to take an online course and exam. Prior to taking the exam, participants should read the comprehensive instructional textbook and complete the reviews at the end of each lesson.
Class sizes are limited to 32 students, so register early!
