Study of the Effect of HIRREM on Hot Flashes

What we are studying

The purpose of this study is to learn the effects of a noninvasive technology that uses auditory tones to improve brainwave balance – possibly helping reduce the frequency and severity of menopause-related hot flashes.

Who is Eligible

  • Genders:
    • Women
  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
    • Asian
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Other
  • Hispanic or Latino
  • Ages 40+

Eligibility Criteria

  • Have hot flashes not related to surgery; radiation; or chemotherapy
  • Do not take medication; hormones; or supplements for menopause management
  • Must have intact uterus and ovaries
  • Not diagnosed with any seizure disorder
  • Not pregnant
  • No severe hearing impairment
  • No anticipated and ongoing use of recreational drugs; alcohol; or energy drinks
  • Have not received HIRREM; BWO; HIRREM-SOP; or the wearable B-2

What is involved

  • Three study visits
  • Eight to 16 sessions (90-120 minutes each) listening to sounds while relaxing in a chair
  • Complete a daily hot flash diary periodically throughout the study


You will be paid $100 compensation for time, travel, and inconvenience related to study visits, if you complete the study.
