Utilizing Protein During Weight Loss to Impact Physical Function (UPLIFT)

What we are studying

This study is being conducted to help determine the appropriate diet composition (i.e., amount of protein, carbohydrate, and fat) to preserve muscle mass and improve physical function and weight loss maintenance in older adults.

Who is Eligible

  • Genders:
    • Men
    • Women
  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
    • Asian
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Other
  • All Ethnicities
  • Ages 65 - 85

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be overweight (BMI of 27-45)
  • Not regularly exercising
  • Not dependent on a cane or walker
  • No joint replacements in last 6 months

What is involved

  • 10 clinic visits over 20-22 months
  • Weight loss and exercise program for 6 months followed by a 12 month weight maintenance phase
  • Blood draws and labs
  • Physical function testing
  • DXA and CT
